Acne
Condition Description
Acne or pimples - teens and adults alike can suffer from them.
Acne develops when the top layer of skin becomes sticky and thickens, making the pores of the skin smaller or more closed. This thickening most often occurs when hormone levels in the body are high, such as during puberty, menstruation or even menopause.
The abnormal production of sebum clogs the pores, causing a buildup of the bacteria "propionibacterium acnes" which contributes to inflammation and redness.
Without treatment, the inflammation can penetrate deep into the skin and create cystic acne - the most severe and painful type of acne that often leaves scars.
How to Treat
There are various treatments for acne depending on age, severity of comedones and inflammation.
Mechanical treatments such as exfoliation or peeling may be recommended for mild, superficial, and comedonal acne.
In other circumstances, our professionals may suggest a treatment using laser, pulsed light, or light therapy to repair the skin more deeply and for its anti-inflammatory effects.
A skin care plan should also be considered to regulate cellular function and contribute to or maintain this control in the long term.
